Tower Hamlets council and police – committed to reducing crime


Yesterday (16 June) Mile End East Police Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) and the council carried out a day of action to tackle the problems in Mile End. Residents have expressed concerns that anti-social behaviour by groups of youths around fast food outlets on Burdett Road and Mile End Road is a problem.

They were visiting fast food outlets to ensure their management take appropriate action to prevent anti-social behaviour from happening around their premises. And the council’s Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officers (THEOs) carried out high visibility patrols at known problem locations throughout the area.

A community safety bus, with displays was based at Burdett Road junction with Mile End Road E3 where officers were on hand to give out crime prevention advice and answer any concerns.

The day included:

  • Ten visits with Environmental Health (LBTH) to Licensed Premises in Mile End Road and Burdett Road -Including Fast Food Outlets and Off Licences.
  • Community Bus deployed and leaflets distributed to members of the public.
  • High visibility police patrols around Mile End Hub including Transport Hub Team and on the Bede Estate in support of the new public set priority dealing with anti-social behaviour issues.
  • Joint patrolling with East End Homes and Poplar Harca as well as door knocking and leafleting on estates publicising Operation Summer Nights a Mile End East initative to concentrate on the Bede Estate ASB during summer months.
  • 30 Stop Accounts
  • 15 Stop and Searches
  • THEOs patrolled with officers from the SNTs.
  • Mobile CCTV deployment
  • Youth club visits
  • Patrols in local parks in particular Mile End Park.

The police and council are asking residents to continue to report your concerns and aim to work with residents to improve Mile End.
